Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, is a solemn occasion for all Americans. It is a day set aside to remember and honor the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the United States Armed Forces. For Gold Star Mothers, Memorial Day holds a particularly deep significance, as it is a time to reflect on the lives of our children who have fallen in service to our country.
The origins of Memorial Day date back to the aftermath of the Civil War. Originally known as Decoration Day, it was a time for communities to come together and decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers and flags. This tradition evolved over the years, and in 1971, Memorial Day was officially recognized as a federal holiday.
For Gold Star Mothers, Memorial Day is more than just a day off work or an opportunity for a family barbecue. It is a day of remembrance and reflection, a day to honor the memory of our sons and daughters who gave their lives for the freedoms we enjoy today. It is a time to visit their graves, to place flowers and flags, and to remember their courage and sacrifice.
On this Memorial Day, we encourage everyone to take a moment to honor our fallen heroes. Attend a local ceremony, visit a veterans’ cemetery, or simply pause for a moment of silence at 3 p.m. local time as part of the National Moment of Remembrance. By doing so, you help keep the memory of our heroes alive and ensure that their sacrifices are never forgotten.
As Gold Star Mothers, we find solace in knowing that our children’s legacies live on through the remembrance and gratitude of others. We invite you to join us in honoring their memory this Memorial Day and every day. Let us come together as a community to remember those who have given everything for our freedom.
